I have tow monitors, when I open the desktop in SteamVR the first monitor shows up fine but when I select the second monitor it's blank. I already tried the fix post about this from a year ago, uninstalling/re-installing SteamVR, disabling cloud saves. Anybody else have this issue and solve it by another method?

Two direct shear tests were carried out on loose and dense sand samples. The box dimentions were 10.0 cm length and 10.0 cm width. 445 g of sand was used to make the loose sand, with an initial height of 3.0cm. At the ultimate state the sample height reduced by 0.1 cm. The same amount of sand was used to make the dense sand sample and at the ultimate state the thickness of the dense sample incrased by 0.15cm. Calculate the original height of the dense sample assuming the specigic gravity of sand is 2.65

Afternoon, everyone. It's a new year so I thought a change of scenery would be nice. My idea was to change the two taimanin we see on the side of the subreddit. I'm going to make polls so the community can decided if they want this and if they do which taimanin they would want. The poll will work like this.
1st Vote. A Yes No to see if people would like that. 2nd Vote. All the current playable taimanins. Highest four go into a 3rd vote. 3rd vote. The top two of this vote go on the sides.
Each vote will last 5 days.

2022.01.17 16:00 IWantChickpeaPasta A Must-Watch on Netflix. Explained: Cults

If you have access to Netflix, a must-watch is the episode from the Explained series on cults. It's short (I'd say ~20 mins?), but extremely informative and eye-opening.
Multiple experts in sociology interviewed, as well as many cult survivors.
They go over how cults + time (+ success) = religion, a running true-to-life joke in sociology.
When the episode talks about the steps that are generally taken when someone is indoctrinated (charismatic, narcissistic "perfect" leader that is loved, an alternate reality being accepted, an us vs. them mentality being cultivated, irrational fear of what will happen if you don't follow the cult, like "hell")... and the steps taken when one leaves a cult (realizing that their "dear leader" is not so perfect, reality making its way through)... the whole thing really hits home.
Hell, the episode even calls out Reddit and other social media platforms for being echo chambers for tiny, new-age cults (think about all the extremist subreddits that exist right now like extomatoes...)
Really important, vital watch. Let me know what y'all think if you get a chance to get it a view.

2022.01.17 16:00 mikehawk1988 Light brown/slimey stool since >10 years

Hi,
sorry for this unpleasant topic, but my stool has been slimey and brown (sometimes yellowish) since more than 10 years. A family member of ours had a pancreas tumor (luckily he survived), but he was told that a slimey and bright stool usually is a warning sign.
I went to the proctologist about 8 years ago and back then the stool sample seemed to be fine.
What I assume makes my stool more slimey/liquid are also the following causes: 1. My lactose intolerance 2. My fructose intolerance 3. SIBO/stress
Should I be worried?
Thank you in advance

2022.01.17 16:00 Morwinthi Which book or series did you want to like more than you actually did?

There are those occasional books that leave you wistful and wanting and unfulfilled, not just out of mere disappointment, but for what you’d hoped they could be. It’s more than a simple letdown or lukewarm response — for whatever reason, you wanted to like these books more than you did. This doesn’t even mean you outright disliked the book in question, or found it flawed on a technical level; it might come down to “it’s not you, [novel], it’s me”.
I can think of a handful of factors that may lead to this feeling, usually in conjunction with one another: * The book seems like an ideal fit based on the premise, advertised tropes, or subject matter * The book has a strong, impactful, or appealing start * The book is an acclaimed as an important contribution or touchstone of the genre * The book is beloved by your friends and reading buddies, asserting a kind of peer pressure
Samantha Shannon’s Priory of the Orange Tree is the book that inspired this post, having recently discussed it with a friend who quit halfway through. Beguiled from the first page, I genuinely believed this would be one of my favorite books of 2021. The premise was attention-grabbing, and I instantly clicked with the author’s style. However, as the story progressed, cracks begun to emerge. Supporting characters were unremarkable and underdeveloped, taking the punch out of what should have been a shocking reveal. The last third felt like a mad dash to the finish line, the pacing haphazardly pushed into overdrive as if the author realized she had only three hundred pages to wrap up her story. All this culminated in a decidedly underwhelming climax. I can only look back and wish the novel had fulfilled the promise it held in the beginning.
This is How You Lose the Time War is another book I wanted to love. Time-traveling queer romance borne of rivalry, sign me up. I can appreciate the creativity and craft Gladstone and El-Mohtar imbued in their work, the careful weaving of mystery throughout the text, and the beauty of the prose, even if it was a tad on the flowery side for my tastes. However, I didn’t connect with it emotionally, which I felt it should have for the kind of story it was. I was left feeling the stylistic ambition eclipsed emotive content and character, leading to an overall sense of detachment. Yet it seems to have worked for others, who felt deeply connected to the story, making this a clear example of “it’s not you, it’s me” — because I wish I did, too.
Finally, there’s The Wheel of Time, Robert Jordan’s magnum opus, a giant of epic fantasy, beloved by many. I wanted to love this one, seeing the enthusiasm others have for these books, but my feelings toward the series are complicated, at times frustrating, and ultimately lukewarm. For one, Jordan’s style isn’t my cup of tea. His prose and pacing often feels like a slog, and his approach to character hasn’t clicked with me. I’ve been told WoT boasts some of the greatest arcs in the genre, but I’m not exactly feeling it five books in, and his characterization often feels flat relative to other authors I’ve enjoyed. Finally, there’s the quagmire of gender-related topics that can (and have) produced bountiful debate. I don’t think Jordan lacks an interesting setup, but the execution leaves me wanting, to say the least.
I can understand why people like Wheel of Time. There’s still much I find interesting about the series, and I enjoy discussing it with others. I’m curious where the story is going and feel compelled to continue, having the notion the sum will be greater than its parts — but I’m in no rush to finish the series, and it’s unlikely to go down as an all-time favorite.
I’m intrigued whether anyone else has experienced this feeling — are there any books or series you wished you liked more than you actually did?

2022.01.17 16:00 heartbeat359 Question about the machine in Reaper’s Gale

I just finished a reread of Reaper’s Gale. I’ve marked this post Spoilers RG because, although I’ve read to the end of the series, it’s been a while and I’m approaching it like a first read.
My question is about the machine that Icarium uses at the end of the book:
He created this machine before the city of Letheras was founded and I understood before the first empire as well. It is implied that it worked, since it is stated that the machine is now “broken”. Do we know why Icarium didn’t use it at the time that he created it?
If we don’t know, do you have any wild theories? I was thinking it would be odd for him to have enough of a clear memory stretch to build this massive machine to then simply forget it immediately and then wander off, though it is kind of in character for him.

2022.01.17 16:00 tranceology3 Some NFTs will be very valuable in the future

Right now the sentiment with most crypto enthusiasts is, NFTs are cash grabs, useless, worthless, and will fade away.
While right now it may seem that way with an over supply of these NFTs, we have to remember this is the FIRST wave of NFTs coming from well known companies. A good amount will be limited, and I think they will be very valuable far in the future, 10-20-30 years.
Like most things that are collectibles, when they first start, there is hype, but then it tends to die out with over supply. But then years later when everyone forgets about em, they spark up again. NFTs is a type of tech that will stay with crypto forever, and will evolve to become more "usable".
However when wave 2 of NFTs start up, these first gen NFTs are going to skyrocket in price, since there were a limited supply, and the new generation, (people born in 2010s-2020s) are gonna want to collect these.
Think of it like comic books, action figures from the 70s/80s, the first video game systems / cartridges. These we very cheap to get when they were in their prime. But today they go anywhere from 5x-100x in price.
Now I understand that is why investors are buying these NFTs right now, because they do believe they will be worth more in the future, but I think there will be a crash, a stall in price action for a long time. People will forget about em, some will lose em, people will laugh how silly they were and what a waste of money. And it is true that a majority will become worthless. But just remember, there will be another wave and we will look back at this time and regret not grabbing some of these first gen NFTs, especially when people assume they are worthless and sell them at a huge loss.

2022.01.17 16:00 autotldr ‘Much remains unknown’: Tonga still cut off by volcanic eruption

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 74%. (I'm a bot)

Suva, Fiji - International help is on its way to the south Pacific kingdom of Tonga, where a massive underwater volcano erupted on Saturday.
The eruption at the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano was recorded as a 7.8-magnitude earthquake by the US Tsunami Warning System - the biggest since Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991 - and triggered tsunami waves from Tonga to Peru, Ecuador and California.
On Monday evening, TV New Zealand confirmed that it would indeed take several weeks before international phone lines and internet services would be restored in Tonga, after an assessment of the submarine cable showed two breaks in it; one of which was located close to the volcano.
"The UN family in the Pacific stands ready to support the people of Tonga to recover from the weekend's volcanic eruption and following tsunami," acting UN Resident Coordinator Jonathan Veitch told Al Jazeera from Fiji.
"In close collaboration with the government of Tonga and our regional and international partners, we are working with the government to ensure our support is targeted and effective. Our teams are on standby with emergency supplies to assist, and our UN staff based in Tonga are already supporting coordination and response efforts in-country."
In a statement on Monday, Tonga's speaker of parliament, Lord Fakafanua, said that more details about Tonga's official disaster relief fund would be announced shortly; emphasising that all relief funds made "Must be verified, transparent and legitimate".

2022.01.17 16:00 findperspective [FFXIV SPOILERS][DS SPOILERS] Making connections to FFXIV

I just finished Death Stranding. A few weeks ago, I finished the main story for FFXIV: Endwalker. Both fantastic.
As I was uncovering the story of the EEs, I couldn't help but see the parallels in Amelie's indecision to bring about a forgone conclusion and Meteion's empathy for suffering concluding in bringing about the end of times.
The protagonists both are tasked with delaying the end, even though it must come to pass eventually. The philosophical quandaries posed in each game were a delight to chew on, I welcome increasingly complex existential dilemmas as storytelling in video games continues to take full advantage of the medium and grow.
I like Death Stranding's take on it more -- it is a grittier message, but still one of realistic, applicable hope. Endwalker came to a great conclusion as well, but perhaps being a more fantastical departure from reality, it felt like more like a conclusion to an epic story than a meditation on the modern state of human (dis)connection.
In any case, both were deeply satisfying works of art to consume. They made my soul buzz.
